Limestone is a naturally occuring form of calcium carbonate. It is used as building materials and also for manufacture of other building materials such as portland cement. It is used for the production of quickline and slaked lime which have wide applications in chemical, metallugical and construction industry. The pure `CaCO_(3)`, called precipitated calcium carbonate, is used extensively as filler, providing bulk to materials such as paint, plastics, printing links and rubber. it is also used in toothpastes, cosmetics and antacids. Quicklime and slaked lime are the cheapest and the most widely used bases for neutralising unwanted acids. Lime is used to neutralise acidic soils. An important application of quicklime is in air pollution control for the removal of `SO_(2)` in electric power plants. slaked lime is used in the manufature of other alkalis and bleacing powder, in sugar refinig, in tanning hide and in water softening.
The drying agent which absorbs `CO_(2)` and reacts violently with water is

A

Sodium carbonate

B

Quicklime

C

Conc `H_(2)SO_(4)`

D

Alcohol

The correct Answer is:
To solve the question regarding the drying agent that absorbs carbon dioxide (CO₂) and reacts violently with water, we can follow these steps: ### Step-by-Step Solution: 1. **Identify the Drying Agent**: We need to find a drying agent that has the ability to absorb CO₂ and also reacts violently with water. 2. **Recall Properties of Calcium Oxide**: Calcium oxide (CaO), commonly known as quicklime, is known for its strong affinity for water and CO₂. 3. **Reaction with Water**: When calcium oxide comes into contact with water, it reacts to form calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) and releases a significant amount of heat. The reaction can be represented as: \[ \text{CaO} + \text{H}_2\text{O} \rightarrow \text{Ca(OH)}_2 + \text{Heat} \] 4. **Absorption of Carbon Dioxide**: Calcium oxide can also react with carbon dioxide to form calcium carbonate (CaCO₃). This reaction can be represented as: \[ \text{CaO} + \text{CO}_2 \rightarrow \text{CaCO}_3 \] 5. **Conclusion**: Based on the above reactions, we conclude that the drying agent which absorbs CO₂ and reacts violently with water is calcium oxide (CaO). ### Final Answer: The drying agent which absorbs CO₂ and reacts violently with water is **Calcium Oxide (CaO)**, also known as quicklime. ---
