Statues and monuments in India are affected by acid rain. How?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In India, most of the statues and monuments are made of marble and are being severely affected by acid rain. This is because, the air around these monuments contains fairly high levels of the oxides of sulphur and nitrogen being thrown into air by industries and power plants in the nearby places. These oxides are instrumental in causing acid rain (for details, see $ 14.3.2). The acids present in the acid rain attack the marble of the statues and monuments and spoil them.
