Derive an expression for kinetic energy ...

Derive an expression for kinetic energy of gas molecules.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Kinetic gas equation is PV = `1/3 m n u^2`
For one mole of gas .n. the no.of molecules will be equal to Avagadro.s number .N.
` therefore m xx N =M` (gram molar mass of the gas)
` therefore PV = 1/3 M u^2`
` =2/2 xx 1/3 M u^2`
` =2/3 xx 1/2 M u^2`
` =2/3 (K.E )`
Ideal gas equation for 1 mole of gas is
` PV = RT `
` therefore 2/3 KE = RT `
` implies KE = 3/2 RT `
For .n. moles KE` = 3/2 nRT`
