Define viscosity and coefficient of viscosity. How does the viscosity of liquids varies with temperature.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Viscosity: Viscosity is a measure of resistance to flow of liquids. This arises due to internal friction between layers of fluids as they slip past one another while liquid flows. Coefficient of Viscosity: The force of friction required to maintain velocity difference of 1cm. sec between two parallel layers of a liquid 1 cm, apart and each layer having an area 1cm2 is called coefficient of viscosity.
` to ` It is denoted by ` eta `
` to F = eta A (du )/(dx)`
` to ` Units : Poise : In CGS system 1 poise `1 g : cm ^(-1) sec^(-1)`
`to` Viscosity of liquids decrease with increase of temperature due to high kinetic energy of molecules that overcome the inter molecular forces.
