A partition divides a container having insulated walls into two compartments I and II. The same gas fills the two compartments whose initial parameters are given. The partition is a conducting wall which can move freely without friction. Which of the following statements is/are correct, with reference to the final equilibrium position?

A

The pressure in the two compartments are unequal.

B

Volume of compartment I is `(2V)/5`

C

Volume of compartment II is `(12V)/5`

D

Final pressure in compartment I is `(4P)/(4)`

The correct Answer is:
C

In the equilibrium position the net force on the partion will be zero.
Hence pressure on both sides are same.
Initially, PV=nRT
`n_(1)=(P_(1)V_(1))/(RT_(1))=(PV)/(RT)` & `n_(2)=((2P)(2V))/(RT)=4(PV)/(RT) rArr n_(2)=4n_(1)`
Moles remains conserved
Finally, pressure becomes equal in both parts.
Using, `P_(1)V_(1)=n_(1)RT_(1)`
`P_(2)V_(2)=n_(1)RT_(1)`
`:' P_(1)=P_(2)` and `T_(1)=T_(2)`
`:. (V_(1))/(V_(2))=(n_(1))/(n_(2))=1/4 rArr V_(2)=4V_(1)`
Also, `V_(1)+V_(2)=3V`
`rArr V_(1)+4V_(1)=3V rArr V_(1)=3/5 V`
and `V_(2)=12/5V`
In compartment (1)
`P_(1)'V_(1)=n_(1)RT_(1)`
`P'_(1)((3V)/5)=((PV)/(RT))RT`
`P'_(1)=(5PV)/(3V)=5/3 P`

A thin-walled spherical conducting shell S of radius R is given charge Q. The same amount of charge is also placed at its center C. Which of the following statements are correct?

A thermally insulated piston divides a nonconducting container in two compartements, right compartement of 2V, T and 2P , while in the left compartement the respective values are V, T and P . Total moles in total system of both comartments is 5 moles. if piston can slide freely, and in the final equilibrium position, volume of right compartement is (xV)/(5) then find the value of x .

A ring shaped tube contain two ideal gases with equal masses and molar masses M_1=32 and M_2=28. The gases are separated by one fixed partition P and another movable stopper S which can move freely without friction inside the ring. The angle alpha as shown in the figure is ...... degrees.

An ideal gas is enclosed in a thermally insulated container. Container is covered by an insulating piston which is connected with spring. Small displacement is given to piston as shown in figure. Which of the following statements is correct? Neglect friction everywhere.

When a sample of ideal gas is changed from an initial state to a final state, various curves can be plotted for the process like P-V curve, V-T curve,P-T curve etc. For example, P-V curve for a fixed amount of an ideal gas at constant temperature is a rectangular hyperbola, V-T curve for a fixed amount of an ideal gas at constant volume is again a straight line. However, the shapes may vary if the constant parameters are also changed. Now, answer the following questions : Two Vander waals gases have same value 'b' but different 'a' value then which of the following statement is correct under simialr condition .

A closed tank has two compartments A and B, both filled with oxygen (assumed to be ideal gas). The partition separating the two compartments is fixed and is a perfect heat insulator (Figure 1). If the old partition is replaced by a new partition which can slide and conduct heat but does NOT allow the gas to leak across (Figure 2), the volume (in m^(3) ) of the compartment A after the system attains equilibrium is ____.

In the figure, a container is shown to have a movable (without friction) piston on top. The container and the piston are all made of perfectly insulated material allowing no heat transfer between outside and inside the container. The container is divided into two compartments by a rigid partition made of a thermally conducting material that allows slow transfer of heat. The lower compartment of the container is filled with 2 moles of an ideal monoatomic gas at 700K and the upper compartment is filled with 2 moles of an ideal diatomic gas at 400K. The heat capacities per mole of an ideal monoatomic gas are C_V=3/2R, C_P=5/2R, and those for an ideal diatomic gas are C_V=5/2R, C_P=7/2R, Consider the partition to be rigidly fixed so that it does not move. When equilibrium is achieved, the final temperature of the gasses will be
