At 300 K and 1 atmospheric pressure, 10 mL of a hydrocarbon required 55 mL of `O_(2)` for complete combustion, and 40 mL of `CO_(2)` is formed. The formula of the hydrocarbon is:

A

`C_(4)H_(6)`

B

`C_(4)H_(7)Cl`

C

`C_(4)H_(10)`

D

`C_(4)H_(8)`

The correct Answer is:
A

`C_(x)H_(y) +(x + y/4)O_(2)(g) to xCO_(2)(g) + y/2 H_(2)O(I)`
`{:("Initial condition", 10 ml, 55 ml, 0,0),("After reaction",0,0,40 ml,-):}`
From stoichiometry concept,
`10(x+y/4) =55`, `10x = 40 rArr x=4`
`rArr 10x + 10(y/4) = 55`
`10x + (10y)/4 = 55`
`y=(15 xx 4)/10 therefore y=6`
Hence `C_(x)H_(y) rArr C_(4)H_(6)`
