Explain anomalous behaviour of water. Write its effect in lakes and ponds.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Water exhibits an anomalous behavior as it contracts on heating between 0°Cand 4°C. The volume of a given amount of water decreases as it is cooled from room temperature until its reaches 4°C. Below 4°C, the volume increases therefore density decreases. This means that water has maximum density at 4°C. Its environmental effect is that the bodies of water such as lakes and ponds freeze at the top first.
