Consider the reversible isothermal expan...

Consider the reversible isothermal expansion of an ideal gas in a closed ststem at two different temeratures `T_(1) "and" T_(2) (T_(1)ltT_(2)).` The correct graphical depiction of the dependence of work done (w) on the final volume (V) is :

A

B

C

D

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

For reversible isothermal expansion of an ideal gas.
`w = -nRT ln V_(2)/V_(1) (V_(2) to "Final volume", V_(1) to "Initial volume")`
`therefore |w| = nRT ln V_(2)/V_(1)`
`|w| = nRT ln V_(2) - nRT ln V_(1)`
So in a graph of |w| versus ln `V_(2)`, the intercept cannot be positive.
