Explain why an organic liquld vaporizes at a temperature below its bolling point in Its steam distillation.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In steam distillation the liquid boils when the sum of vapour pressures due to the orginic liquid `(P_(1))` and that due to water `( P_(2))` becomes equal to the atmospheric pressure `(P) ` i.e.,` P = P _(1) + P _(2).`
`therefore P _(1)` is lower that P the organic liquid vaporises at lower temperature than it.s boiling point.
