Preparation of eacetylene:
1. Dehydrohalogenation : Acetylene is obtained when dibromo ethane is heated with alcoholic KOH.
`H - underset( Br ) underset( |) overset( H) overset( |) (C) - underset( H) underset(|) overset( Br ) overset(|)(C) - H overset( "Alcoholic KOH") underset("-HBr") to underset( " Vinyl bromide") (H - underset( Br ) underset(|) (C) = underset( H) underset(|) (C)- H) underset("- HBr") overset("Alcoholic XOH") to underset("Acetylene") ( H - C -= C - H)`
1, 2- dibromo ethane. Vinyl bromide
2. Acetylene is obtained by neating lodoform with silver powder.
`CHI _(3) + 5 Ag + CHI _(3) underset( Delta ) to H - C-= C - H + 6 AGI`
3. Addition of water: Acetylene underggoes addition reaction with water in the presence of mercuric sulphate and sulphuric acid. Vinyl alcohol formed in the reaction undergoes rearrangement and gives acetaldehyde.
` CH -= CH + H _(2) O underset( 30%H _(2) SO_(4)) overset( 1 % H g SO _(4)) to [ CH _(2) = underset( OH) underset( |) ( CH) ] harr underset( " Acetaldehyde") ( CH - underset (O) underset( |) (CH))`
4. Reaction with ozone: Acetylene reacts with ozone to form an ozonide which on hydrolysis in presence of Zn forms glyoxal.
