Write a not on :
Steam distillation

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Steam distillation : Here liquids which are immiscrible in water passes high boiling point and steam volatile are purified. In this method steam is passed into the hot liquid that is to be purified. The mixture of steam and vapour of volatile organic compound come out. This is because of the sum of the vapour pressures of steam and the liquid to be purified become equal to the atmospheric pressure. They are passed through the condenser and condensed and finally collected in the receiver. The water layer and the organic liquid layer are separated using a separating funnel.
