Why is Wurtz reaction not preferred for ...

Why is Wurtz reaction not preferred for the preparation of alkanes containing odd number of carbon atoms ? Illustrate with one example.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Wurtz reaction :- Alkyl halides reacts with sodium metal in presence of dry ether to form higher alkanes.
`R - X + 2 Na + R - X overset("Either") to R-R + 2 NaX`
`to` Wurtz reaction is preferred to prepare even no.of Carbons containing alkanes but not for odd no.of Carbons containing Alkanes.
`to` For getting odd no.of Carbons containing alkanes we have to consider two different alkyl ha lides.
`to` The products obtained are in mixture form, So the percentage of the desired hydrocarbon is less. i.e., yield of the desired product is low.
`to` Methane can not be prepared by this reaction.
