Explain Carius method for the determination of Halogens quantitatively in an organic compound.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Estimation of halogens : (Carius method) Known mass of organic compound is heated with framing nitric acid in the presence of `AgNo_(3)` in a hard glass tube called carius tube. Carbon and hydrogen of the compound are oxidised to `CO_(2) and H_(2)O.` Halogens forms silver halide. So obtained silver halide (Agx) is filtered, washed, dried and weighed.
% g of helogen `= ( 100 xx b xx " atomic mass of .x.")/( a xx "molecular mass of Agx")`
Where a= mass of organic compound, b = mass of Agx formed
x= halogen atom.
