For the circuit shown in the given diagram:
What is the value of
(i) current through `6Omega` resistor?
(ii) potential difference across `12Omega` resistor?

Text Solution

Let the current through the circuit be I which is divided into `I_(1)` and `I_(2)` in the arms AB and CD respectively, then we have
`I= I_(1)+ I_(2)`
In the arm AB, the total resistance is
`R_(1)= 6Omega+ 3Omega= 9Omega`
and the total resistance in the arm CD is
`R_(2)= 12Omega+ 3Omega= 15Omega`
(i) Then current in the `6Omega` resistor i.e.,
`I_(1)= (V)/(R_(1))= (4)/(9)= 0.44A`
Now the current through CD is
`I_(2)= (V)/(R_(2))= (4)/(15)= 0.27A`
The potential difference across `12Omega` resistor is
`implies V_(1)= I_(2) xx 12Omega`
`:. V_(1)= 0.27 xx 12= 3.24V`
