Why do ionic compounds have high melting point ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Ionic compounds are made up of ions and these ions in close proximity attract other oppositely charged ions and this leads to the formation of a compact lattice structure with strong attractive forces between the ions. When the compound is heated, lot of energy is needed to break the attractive forces, thus they have a high melting point
