In joining railway tracks or cracked machine parts, reaction of `Fe_(2)O_(3)` wih Al is utilized. Give details.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When al reacts with ferric oxide, it reduces the oxide to metal and this reaction is highly exothermic. The energy given out during the reaction melts the iron and this molten iron is filled in gaps between broken railway tracks and borken machinery parts. This is called thermite welding.
`Fe_(2)O_(3)+2Al to Al_(2)O_(3)+2Fe+` Heat.
