DNA polymerase enzyme catalyses the copying of a DNA strand into another complementary strand through the process of replication. It was discovered by A. Kornberg and coworkers in E.coli in 1956 in the presence of a preformed DNA template. It adds deoxyribonucletiodes to the 3.-OH end of a growing polynucleotide. The new nucleotide comes as nucleoside triphosphate and is joined to the open - OH of polynucleotide by removal of pyrophosphate.
