Extraction of copper directly from sulphide ores is less favourable than that from its oxide ore through reduction.

The standard free energy for the formatio `Cu_(2)S` (pyrites) is greater than those of `CS_(2)` and `H_(2)S` Hence, `Cu_(2)S` cannot be reduced by carbon or hydrogen. However, the free energy of copper oxide is less than that of `CO_(2)` . That is the reason, extraction of copper is easier from its oxide through reduction.
