Enzyme Catalysts Complex nitrogenous organic compounds which are produced by living plants and animals are called as enzymes. These are actually protein molecules of high molecular mass and form colloidal solutions in water. These are very effective catalysts, can catalyse numerous reactions, especially those connected with natural processes. Number of reactions that occur in the body of living organisms are catalysed by enzymes. Thus, enzymes are also known as biochemical catalysts and this phenomenon is known as biochemical catalysis
