As a result of `p pi-p pi` back bonding, the electron deficiency of boron in `BF_3` decreases and thus, the Lewis acid character of `BF_3` is minimum. As the size of the halogen atom increases from F to Cl to Br, the extent of overlap between vacant 2p orbital of boron and filled 3p orbital of Cl or 4p orbital of Br decreases, due to appreciable differences in the energies of the overlapping orbitals. Hence, the tendency of `p pi = p pi` bond formation decreases in the order: `BF_3 gt BCl_3 gt B Br_3`
