A solid has cubic structure in which X atoms are located at the corners of the cube, Y atoms at the body centre and O atoms at the edge centres. What is the formula of the compound?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Number of atoms of X per unit cell = 8(1/8) = 1
Contribution of Y towards unit cell = `1xx1` = 1
Number of edge centres in a cube = 12
Each O atom present at an edge centre makes 1/4 contribution towards the unit cell.
Therefore, number of O atoms per unit cell = 12(1/4) = 3
Thus the formula of the compound is `XYO_(3)`
