What is the concentration of cation vacancies if KCl is doped with 0.01% Ga As (gallium arsenide)?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

100 moles of KCl contains `10^(-2)` moles of Ga As. Therefore, 1 mol of KCl doped with Ga As contains
= `10^(-2)/100=10^(-4)` mol
As one `Ga^(3+)` ion can replace 3 `K^(+)` ions and maintain electrical neutrality, 2 vacancies per `Ga^(3+)` ion will be created.
Therefore, concentration of cation vacancy = `2xx10^(-4)` mol/mol of KCl
= `2xx10^(-4)xx6.023xx10^(23)"mol"^(-1)=1.2046xx10^(20)"mol"^(-1)`
