A complex carbohydrate present in the cell wall of plants is cellulose. In human beings, the enzyme cellulase is absent which helps in digesting cellulose. Hence, it acts as roughage. This roughage adds fibre to the diet and helps in easy move ment of the bowel and prevents constipation.
