What are chlorofluorocarbons? How are they responsible for causing ozone hole in atmosphere? What will be the consequences of ozone hole?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Compounds that contain chlorine and fluorine (CFC's).
• These react with the ozone layer in the strato-sphere (when UV rays strike CFC, a carbon chloride bond breaks and chlorine atom is produced which reacts with the ozone molecule, breaking it apart).
• Depletion of ozone layer leads to skin cancer and skin burns/mutations in DNA.
