Briefly explain depletion of ozone layer and its effects.

Verified by Experts

Ozone depletion means the thinning of ozone blanket in the atmosphere. Harmful synthetic chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons are responsible for ozone depletion. These are widely used as coolants in refrigerators and air conditioners, in fire extinguishers, in aerosol sprayers, and us propellants. Once released in the air, these chemical produce 'active chlorine' (Cl and CIO radicals) in the presence of UV radiations. These radicals, through chain reaction, then destroy the ozone by converting it into oxygen. Thinning of ozone layer allows ultraviolet (UV) radiations to pass through it which then strike the earth and cause skin cancer, damage to eyes and immune system.
