An ant moves along the identical steps from P to Q as shown in the figure in a figure in a duration of 8.5 seonds. Then the speed and velocity of the ant respectively are _____ m `s^(-1) and ______ m s ^(-1)`

A

`0.5,5/17`

B

`0.5,0.5`

C

`5/17,5/17`

D

The correct Answer is:
A

Time taken to moved steps, T = 8.5 seconds.
As all steps are identical, the distance travelled by the ant when it climbs one step = `(1/4+1/4)m=1/2m`
Total distance travelled = `(8(1)/2xx1/2)m`
`=17/2xx1/2=17/4`

Total time taken, (t) = 8.5 s
Average speed = `("total distance")/("total time")`
`(17/4m)/(17/2s)=1/2ms^(-1)=0.5ms^(-1)`
Velocity = `("displacement")/("time")`
= `2.5/8.5=5/17`
