The virus enters macrophages which act as HIV factory in humans.
(i) Here the RNA genome of the virus undergoes reverse transcription to form DNA, with the help of enzyme reverse tanscriptase.
(ii) The viral DNA becomes incorportated into the DNA of the host cells (macrophages) and directs the host cell to produce progeny viruses.
(iii) The progeny viures are released in the blood and they attack other helper T-cells. (iv) In this manner, the number of T-lymphocytes is decreased in the body of the infected person.
