Explanation

Bt-cotton is a transgenic crop (GMC) which has been made insect resistant. It is resistant against attack by bollworms. The cry gene encoding for insecticidal cry protein has been introduced from bacterium. Bacillus thuringiensis which produces inactive toxin which becomes active in the gut of insects in alkaline conditions, solubilises crystals and kills the insect. Cry protein binds to midgut epithetial cells, creates pores and lysis it thius killing the insect.
Bt-word in Bt-cotton stands for bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis whose cry genes have been introduced into cotton to make it resistant against bollworms.
