Explain gravity separation (or hydraulic washing) in extraction of metals.

This is based on the differences in gravities or densities of the ore and the gangue particles. In case the ore is very heavy like tin and gold, the lighter particles may be removed by washing with water. In one such process an upward stream of running water is used to wash the powdered ore. The lighter gangue particles are washed away leaving behind the heavier ore particles.
