Smelting (Carbon-reduction Method): Smelting is the process of extracting a metal by heating the ore with carbon.
The roasted ore is mixed with a adequate quantity of carbon (coal or coke) and heated in a furnace. Carbon reduces the oxide ore to the free metal. For example,

For smelting, usually reverberatóry or blast furnaces is used. The quantity of air saupply is also limited. Sometimes metal may be obtained in their vapour fórm e.g., zinc. In such cases, smelting cannot be carried out in open furnaces:
