Explain distillation for the refining of metals.

This method is used for the extraction of metals with low boiling points e.g., Zn, Cd, Hg, Bi etc. In this method, the impure metals is heated at its boiling point and the vapours are condensed to obtain pure metal. The impurities present are non-volatile in nature. A further distillation, usually in vaccuum gives a very pure product. Vaccuum distillation is also used to produce metals of Group 1 and 2 in a high degree of purity
