A ray of monochromatic light travelling ...

A ray of monochromatic light travelling in vacuum with speed c ,wavelength `gamma` and frequency v,enters into a medium of refrative index 1.5 .What will be its new speed ,wavelength and frequency?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Refractive index `=mu=1.5`
Let `C, lamda` and n be the velocity of light, wavelength of light and frequency of light in vacuum.
We know frequencey of light does not change on going from one medium to another.
`:.` Frequency of light remains same.
Let v=velocity of light in given medium.
`lamda_(m)=` wavelenth of light in given medium.
We know `mu=c/v`
`v=c/(mu)=(3xx10^(8))/1.5=2xx10^(8)m//s`
Also `v=lamda_(m^(n))`
`lamda_(m)=v/n=(2xx10^(8))/n m`
