Define resolving power of compound microscope.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Resolving power of microscope is defined as its ability to form distinctly separate images of two closely spaced objects.
Resolving power of a microscope is given by
`R.P.= (1)/("Limit of revolution")=(1)/(lambda//2musin theta)`
`R.P.=(2mu sin theta)/(lambda)`
Thus, R.P. of a microscope depends upon (i) wavelength of light used to illuminate the object, (ii) refractive index of the medium in which the object is placed and (iii) semi-vertical angle of the cone of rays staring from the object and entering into the microscope.
