Explain the terms potential barrier for a junction diode.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Potential barrier: When a p-n junction is formed, a fictitious battery gets developed across the junction, with positive pole connected to N-region and negative pole to P-region of p-n junction. This fictitious battery acts as a potential barrier as it oppose the migration of majority carrier across the p-n junction. The value of this potential barrier is 0.7 volt for silicon semiconductor diode and 0.3 volt for germanium semiconductor diode.
