Why is osmotic pressure of 1 M solution ...

Why is osmotic pressure of 1 M solution of NaCI approximately double than that of 1 M solution of sugar ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Sodium chloride is a strong electrolyte and dissociates fully in solution where as sugar does not dissociate in solution . The number of particles in case of sodium chloride in solution would become double than that of sugar solution. Now osmotic pressure being a colligative property de pends upon the number of particles of solutions . Thus osmotic pressure of 1 M NaCl solution is approximately double then that of 1 M sugar solution
