What is corrosion?...

What is corrosion?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

"Corrosion" is a general term applied to the process in which uncombined metals change over to compounds. Almost all metals except the least reactive metals such as gold, platinum etc., are attacked by environment. For example, silver tarnishes, copper develops a green coating, lead loses lustre, iron rusts due to corrosion. thus, corrosion is a process of deterioration of a metal as a result of its reaction with air and water (environment) surrounding it. it is to the formation of compounds such as sulphides, oxides, carbonates, hydroxides etc. corrosion of iron is called rusting.
