Why does NO2 dimerise ?...

Why does `NO_2` dimerise ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The high solubility of `NH_3` in water can be expalined on the basis of H-bonding ability of `NH_3` with `H_2 O`. `NH_3` dissolves in water to give `NH_4 OH`, which is feebly ionised to give `NH_4^-` and `OH^-` ions
`NH_3(g) + H_2 O(l) to NH_4 OH (aq)`
`NH_4 OH (aq) hArr NH_4^+ (aq) + OH^- (aq)`
