Inert pair effect strongly exists in heavy p-block elements. Comment.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

General valence shell electronic configuration of p-block elements is,
`ns^2 np^(1-6)`
As we more down a group in p block the reluctance of the pair of s-electrons belonging to the valence shell to take part in bond formation increases. This is due to wider energy gap between ns and np subshells. Therefore, inert pair effect strongly exists in heavy p-block elements.
