PCl5 is known but PI5 is not known. Why?...

`PCl_5` is known but `PI5` is not known. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

It is mainly due to the following two reasons.
(a) An element shows to highest oxidation state only when it is attached to the more electronegative element. Chlorine is much more electronegative than iodine.
(b) Atomic size of iodine is much larger than that of chlorine. It is quite impossible to accomodate five larger iodine atoms around phosphorus due to steric reasons.
