Why is `K_(a_2)` << `k_(a_1)` for `H_2SO_4` in water?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`H_2 SO_4` is a very stong acid in water mainly due to its first ionistation to `H_3 O^+` and `HSO_4^-`.
`H_2 SO_4 + H_2 O overset(K_(a_1))hArr H_3 O^+ + HSO_4^-`
The ionistation of `HSO_4^(-)` to `H_3O^+` and `SO_2^(2-)` is very very small. That is way `Ka_2 lt lt lt Ka_1` .
`HSO_4^(-) + H_2 O overset(K_(a_1))hArr H_3 O^+ + SO_4^(2-)`
