What are interhalogen compounds ? Give example.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Halogens have a tendency to combine mutually to form covalent compounds, called interhalogen compounds. The formation of these compounds is due to small electronegativity difference between the combining halogen atoms e.g-,
`I_2 + Cl_2 to underset("Iodine monochloride")(2ICl)`
`I_2 + 5F_2 overset(Delta)to underset("Iodine pentafluoride")(2IF_5)`
`Cl_2 + 3F_2 overset(Delta)to underset("Chlorine trifluoride")(2ClF_3)`
