Discuss the molecular shape of `BrF_3` on the basis of VSEPR theory.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Both Br and F have 7 electrons in their valence shells. The Lewis dot structure of `BrF_3` indicates that Br has 2 lone pairs and 3 bond pairs. A total of 5 pairs around Br indicates a trigonal bipyramid geometry with two equatorial positions occupied by lone pairs. Thus molecular shape of `BrF_3` slightly bent .T. -shaped.
