Why electron gain enthalpies of noble gases are positive ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The members of the noble gas family have `ns^2 np^6` configuration. As such noble gases have no tendency to accept electrons and thus have positive electron gain enthalpies i.e., energy is needed to add an electron to an atom of the noble gas.
