Write a note on optical isomerism....

Write a note on optical isomerism.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Oprical isomerism. This type of isomerism is due to the lack of symmetry in the complex. Optical isomers are just the mirror images of one another, and they cannot be superimposed. The two isomers rotate the plane of plane polarised light, equally but hi opposite directions. One which rotate the plane polarised light towards left is called leva and the other is called dextro. Complexes with co-ordination number six and having bidentate ligands show this type of isomerism.
Examples.
(i) trioxalatochromate(III)ion, `[Cr("ox")_3]^(3-)`

(ii) tris(ethane-l, 2-diamine)cobalt(III) ion, `[Co(en)_3]^(3+)`
