Biosphere reserves.They are large tracts of protected land with multiple use of preserving the genetic diversity of representative ecosystem by protecting wildlife,traditional lifestyle of the tribals and varied plant and animal genetic resources .They have been set up under MAB programme of UNESCO starting in 1975. In India the first biosphere reserve to be establish was Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve In 1986. In May 2002,408 biosphetre reserves had been established in 94 countries.In India ,13 biosphere reserve had been established by then. Five more were added later on Achanakamar-Amarkuntak, katchch, cold desert and seshachalam hills and panna.They are also included under the category of national parks. Out of these seven have been included in the world network of Biosphere reserve by UNESCO.THey are Nilgiri, Sunderbans, Gulf of Mannar, Pachmarhi, Similipal, Nokrek and Nanda Devi.
