Scandium (z = 21) is a transition element but zinc (z = 30) is not. Explain.

Transition elements are those elements which have partially filled d-orbitals. Scandium has partially filled d-orbital due to electronic configuration `3d^1` . Whereas, zinc has fully filled d-orbital due to electronic configuration `3d^10` . So, Sc is a transition element but Zn is not a transition element.
