Chloroform oxidised to phosgene in the presence of air or light. Ethyl alcohol changes phosgene to harmless ethyl carbonate. So, alcohol decreases the oxidation of chloroform to phosgene.
` 2C_2 H_5 OH +CoCl_2 to (C_2 H_5 )_2 CO_3 +2HCl `
Hence, ethyl alcohol is added to chloroform bottles.
