What are thermosetting and thermoplastic...

What are thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers ? Give one example of each.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Thermoplastic polymers :The polymers having intermediat~ forces ofattraction and not formed through cross-linkage between the chains are called thehnoplastic polymers.
On heating they become soft and can be used again and again. For example, teflon, polyvinylchloride, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) etc.
ii) Thermosetting polymers : These polymers are made from semiflui.d polymers having low molecular masses through an extensive cross linkage. On heating, they become hard, insoluble and infusible. For example, bakelite, urea -formaldehyde resin etc.
