Primary alcohol reacts with sodium to from sodium alcohol oxide, secondary and tertiary alcohol also reacts with sodium to from alcohol oxide secondary and tertiary alcohol also reacts sodium metal to from alcohol oxide but they are slow to react due to hindrance group (more methyl group) attached to them .
