What is normal atmospheric pressure ?...

What is normal atmospheric pressure ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The pressure exerted by air is called atmospheric pressure.
If you press a rubber sucker hard on a smooth surface, it sticks to the surface and is pulled out only when large force is applied.
When the sucker is pressed most of the air between its cup and the surface escapes out. The sucker sticks to the surface because the pressure of atmosphere acts on it. It would not possible for any human being to pull the sucker off the surface if there were no air at all between the sucker and the surface. This shows that magnitude of atmospheric pressure is very large.
